FOUNDER PRESIDENT

An undaunted leader emerged in the horizon of insurance in the year 1956. A dedicated worker cum indispensible leader served the cause of insurance people as well as the interest of valued customer and esteemed institution throughout his life. At the cost of his service career he travelled length and breadth of the country to organize and mobilize the field workers of Life Insurance Corporation of India for the safety, security and financial protection of their job. The leader who alone protected the service of more than 700 employees in the regime of Janata Government by suing LIC of India in the jurisdiction of Kolkata High Court covering major area of eastern zone is deeply respected Shri Sushil Kumar Chakraborty, the founder President of our beloved organization LIC’S Retired Development Officer’s Welfare Association(Eastern Zone).

The legendary figure in the insurance world, Shri Sushil Kumar Chakraborty was born on 01.12.1932 in Noakhali District of presently Bangladesh. He studied in Ramgunge Madhupur School and Metropolitan Institution, Pathuriaghata Street, Kolkata-700007 and passed the Matriculation Examination in the year 1948. Subsequently he cleared theI.Com. exam from Surendranath College and B.A from Bidyasagar College. His father Shri Janaki Kumar Chakraborty was freedom fighter and got freedom fighter pension till his death in the year 1984. Shri Sushil Kumar Chakraborty joined Hindusthan Life Insurance as an Inspector in the year 1956, just before nationalization of L.I.C of India. In his service career he was devoted soldier of NFIFWI from day one. Soon he got the place in leadership. At the initial stage he was organizer of City Br. 16 under erstwhile Kolkata Division. He had taken the responsibility as General Secretary of Kolkata Division from 1973 to 1984 and took the charge of Presidentship from 1984 to 1991. He was also Zonal Secretary of Eastern Zone and All India Joint Secretary simultaneously from 1984 to 1994.

Major contribution of Shri Sushil Kumar Chakraborty in his long association with NFIFWI are mainly 1) meeting with Finance Minister Mr. H.M. Patel, P.A to Prime Minister Mr. V. An outstanding leader like Sushil Chakraborty cannot accept restful life after retirement. An energetic, active, agile leader with amiable nature who relentlessly fought for the basic cause of the Development Officers’ throughout his life will forget his colleagues just for retirement, is next to impossible in his philosophy of life. Thus, he thought about an organization which will be protected and secured shelter of retired employees who were once Development Officers in LICI.

Thought process started for years. He took the help of Shri K.P.Biswas and other senior colleagues in this direction. Several initial informal discussions for years forced Shri Sushil Kumar Chacraborty to talk and write to the then Zonal Secretary, NFIFWI Shri Susanta Samaddar for help and assistance in formation of retired Development Officers association. In his letter to Shri Samaddar dated 22.01.2004 he congratulated Zonal Secretary of his effort at Central level for concurrence of the parent body for setting up such an organization.

On 29.01.2004 he convened a meeting of retired Dev. Officers in Zonal Federation office at 16, Hare Street, Kolkata-700001 at 3 P.M.
